Charon, Ferryman of the River Styx Small Statue

In Greek mythology, Charon (or Kharon) was an underworld deity who was the ferryman of Hades. In the afterlife, souls encountered him along the banks of the River Styx as they waited for passage to Hades for judgment. Charon would safely escort souls across the river for a fee - an obolus - which was a small coin placed in the mouth of the deceased by their loved ones during burial. Without payment, the dead would wander the banks for eternity. Charon, the grim gatekeeper, is indifferent to pleas or bribes beyond his modest fare. Often depicted as an elderly, bearded man in a tattered robe, he steers his boat with a single oar. This somber sculpture portrays Charon, the stoic ferryman in Greek mythology. Befitting a character of the underworld, his skiff and the top of his oar are adorned with skulls. This small polystone sculpture has a metallic bronze finish with painted accents. Overall: 3-3/8” tall, 3-3/4" long, 1-5/8" deep
