Goat & Sheep Fence Panels Goats are the hardest common livestock to fence. They climb, they lean, they test every joint, and they will find the one weak span in a run. Sheep are gentler on a fence but push under it. "Isn't welded wire bad for goats?" This comes up constantly and it deserves a straight answer. The warning is real, and it is about thin welded roll — 14 gauge fencing sold in a roll, where the welds pop the first time a goat stands on it. That reputation is deserved. It does not describe a 4 to 6 gauge welded panel. A heavy welded panel is a different product with roughly an order of magnitude more steel at every joint. It does not deform when a goat climbs it, which is exactly why cattle and hog panels have been the standard goat fence on working farms for decades. Which opening 4" x 4" — the standard for goats and sheep without horns, and the same spec as the sheep-and-goat panel sold by the traditional wire brands. 2" x 2" — for horned goats. A 4-inch opening is exactly the size a horned head goes into and does not come out of. If you keep horned stock, do not use 4x4. Height and layout 4 ft contains most sheep. Goats want 4 to 5 ft, and climbers want 5 ft with no horizontal rail on the outside to use as a step. Brace every corner properly — goats find the corner first.
