Fringed Bluestar

Amsonia ciliata Common names include Fringed Blue Star and Texas Bluestar This herbaceous perennial plant is native to dry open woods, prairies, and savanna habitats of the eastern and central United States. A member of the milkweed and dogbane family, fringed bluestar grows to heights of around 2 feet tall and sports flower stalks with copious amounts of blue/purple star shaped flowers that slightly resemble milkweed blossoms. Preferring part shade to full sun conditions, this plant has blooms from March into the early summer. It appreciates supplemental summer watering during its first year, especially if planted in full sun, but is quite drought tolerant once established. Its blooms are enjoyed by many species of native pollinators, but is a favorite of butterflies, moths, and bumblebees.
