Georgian Gothic! Scarce Long Faceted Whitby Jet Necklace
A Gothic dream, we have here an unusual and rare necklace of small hand faceted Whitby Jet beads. Circa 1860's, and entirely hand crafted with a neat and skilled precision; there is a slight graduation in size meaning it can be worn doubled in a range of different combinations. Having worked with Whitby Jet over 25 years, we've only ever seen one similar necklace of such length. As such it is a rare survivor and we must say that the Jet is of the most superior quality! A fossilised wood of the Araucaria tree which was laid down in ancient Jurassic forests and collected from the beaches around Whitby in Yorkshire, England, being worked in workshops in the town. Oft worn in mourning during the latter Victorian era, the light but dramatic appearance complimented the large skirts and puffy sleeves of fashion at the time. Read our BLOG article on Whitby Jet here. Measurements: the length measures at 50 inches (all has been rethreaded by our clever lady stringer).
