Avalokiteshvara, Gold on Black

Avalokiteshvara, Chenrezig in Tibetan: the bodhisattva of compassion, who vowed not to enter nirvana until every being was free. The mantra om mani padme hum is his. The Dalai Lamas are held to be his emanations, which places this figure at the centre of Tibetan religious life. Tashi Gurung lives in Lo Manthang, the walled capital of the former Kingdom of Lo, on Nepal's border with Tibet. He has painted thangkas in the classical Tibetan Buddhist tradition since the 1990s.
