Constructed of four triangular linen panels in yellow, black, blue, and red, the flag retains its original heavy canvas hoist, rope lanyard, and wooden toggle. Used aboard merchant and naval vessels, alphabet signal flags formed part of the International Code of Signals, enabling ships to communicate navigational, operational, and emergency messages between vessels and shore stations. When raised alone, the Zulu flag signified "I require a tug," indicating that the vessel required tug assistance for manoeuvring. When used by fishing vessels, it signified "I am shooting nets."
