Metallic powders are widely used as feedstock in several manufacturing processes, including additive manufacturing (AM), hot isostatic pressing (HIP), spark plasma sintering (SPS) and for all powder-based technologies the properties of the feedstock are crucial. Powder characteristics|properties are strongly influenced by the production route, making control of powder fabrication essential. Atomization technologies are commonly used for metallic powder fabrication and different purity, morphology, particle size distribution and flowability can be obtained depending on the type of atomization. This review compares the main atomization processes for metallic powder production, addressing the influence of process parameters on powder characteristics and properties and their correlation with the final parts properties.
