"Tachibana Shibori" Vintage Juban Underkimono

This listing is for a traditional underkimono (juban in Japanese) designed to be worn beneath a woman's kimono. A lively patchwork of traditional Japanese symbols fills this striking red and white juban, with circular medallions jacquard featuring maple leaf, chrysanthemum, butterfly, camellia, paulownia, and tachibana motifs woven subtly into the silk. Tachibana (orange blossoms) appear again in finely dotted kanoko (fawn spot) shibori alongside bolder miura shibori, a loop-binding technique that creates the larger, softly irregular white shapes with their distinctive feathery edges. The mix of auspicious plants and seasonal imagery carries associations with longevity, resilience, beauty, and good fortune. This juban has no lining, making it a lighter, breathable layer. Underkimono make wonderful robes because they are cut shorter than outer kimono, so they do not have the extra length that is typically folded at the waist for traditional dressing. The lighter weight and streamlined shape make them easy to slip on and wear without added bulk.
