The photographer Chow San recalls vivid memories from youth: running into Ricky Hui at Sin Tat Plaza, seeing Wong Ha Wai present a flower board at Sunbeam Theatre, and unexpectedly encountering Tang Ying Man, Maria Cordero, and Lam Fun Kwong at a funeral parlor. These many star encounters, however, were never recorded. It was only later, with a camera always by their side, that the act of documenting the “black-and-white” and the impermanence of everyday life began. Born in Hong Kong into an ordinary working-class family, Chow San found passion in photography, shooting daily — most often during commutes to and from work. Over eight years, without ever counting the rolls of film used, the practice revealed different forms of “desire.” With a direct and honest mindset, Chow San presses the shutter instinctively to reflect the realities of society. The resulting photo collection is titled Travel.
