Sanguisorba obtusa
Sanguisorba obtusa (Japanese Burnet) Sanguisorba obtusa is a graceful and distinctive burnet, commonly known as Japanese Burnet. It produces attractive mounds of blue-green pinnate foliage from which arching stems carry soft rose-pink, bottlebrush-shaped flowerheads that nod and sway elegantly in the breeze from midsummer into autumn. A superb plant for pollinators, it is particularly attractive to bees and butterflies. The arching habit of Sanguisorba obtusa gives it a particularly graceful, informal quality that suits naturalistic, cottage, and prairie-style plantings equally well. It works beautifully in the middle of a border combined with grasses, Persicaria, and other late-season perennials. Its fine-textured foliage provides interest from spring, and the flowerheads continue to look attractive as they fade and dry into autumn.
