The ATHLETIC T-SHIRT / DAYTONA 68’ is made from 6.8 oz. loopwheel knit cotton and sewn with 100% cotton thread. The front features a rubber print, hand applied at our Kobe HQ, referencing the 1968 Daytona 500, the season-opening race of American stock car racing and one of its most famous moments. By the late 1960s, Daytona had become as much a media event as a race, drawing factory teams, packed grandstands, and national attention. The look of the era spilled beyond the track into film, advertising, and print, shaping the visual language of speed, pit crews, and American motorsport culture. Loopwheel machines are known to knit a sluggish pace, with only a single meter of fabric produced every hour. When compared to contemporary manufacturing methods, the loopwheel machines apply a very low thread tension allowing the production of an exceedingly premium and unique fabric. The resulting material feels like it has been hand woven, with a stretchy element to it, a quality that cannot be replicated by modern production techniques. The crucial difference is that loopwheel textiles are knitted in an oval shaped sequence to yield a fabric that will comfortably stretch with wear, but will return to its original dimensions with a wash.
