Mid 19th Century Percussion Cap Pepperbox Signed JAs HARPER MAKER A 6 shot 0.41" calibre percussion cap pepperbox revolver with no nipple shield. Foliate engraving covers the body, frame, trigger guard and hammer and on the left side within an oval cartouche is the makers names JAs HARPER MAKER. The steelwork is worn, but clean and there are areas which still have its original browning. Other than this the metalwork has a pleasant smooth dark patina. There are Birmingham Proof Marks between each barrel on the cylinder. The hatched two piece walnut grip is well worn, but seems to have no splits or cracks. It's most distinguishable feature however is the very substantial silver (white metal) lions head buttcap, which although worn retains all of its regal features. It is a little more unusual to see a pepperbox like this with no nipple shield, but by no means unique. The mainspring of this piece is good and the double action only mechanism operates smoothly. I can only find reference to one James Harper who resided in 85 Weaman Street, Birmingham between 1842 and 1872. A solid and handsome pepperbox especially with that buttcap! Barrel length 8cm, Overall length 21cm. This antique pistol is considered obsolete and non functioning, and is sold as a collectable ornamental item.
