Oak Coffer

The lid opens on traditional iron strap hinges, with interior surfaces showing darkened oxidation consistent with age and use. The joinery appears robust, likely mortise and tenon construction, supporting the piece’s durability and original function as a storage coffer. The base is particularly distinctive, featuring carved apron work and zoomorphic feet terminating in stylized animal forms, adding to the sculptural quality of the piece. Side panels are more restrained, with carved motifs and original metal drop handles, suggesting a balance between decorative front presentation and practical utility. The surface displays a deep, warm patina with visible wear, softening to the carved edges and high points, consistent with long-term handling and age.
