Its nose combines richness and concentration with savoury complexity and depth, while a subtle floral quality prevents all that fruit intensity from feeling one-dimensional. Fleshy blackberry and freshly smooshed dark fruits lead the fruit profile, joined by a touch of cherry, violets and culinary herbs. Chocolate, caramelisation and toasted hazelnut then bring darker, more developed oak barrel tones that underline the wine’s mature, meaty personality. There is considerable depth on the palate, but the tannins are elegant and precise rather than coarse. This is a wine of length and balance, with maturity now adding another dimension to its original power. Drink now through 2033 at around 17°C. Pair it with braised beef cheek, roast duck or hard aged cheese.
