Vintage: 2018 Region: Vouvray, Loire Valley Grape variety: Chenin Blanc Average vine age: 25 years Alcohol: 12.5% ABV Residual sugar: 5 grams per litre (Extra Brut) Vinification: First fermentation in tank in Brisebarre’s traditional tuffeau limestone cellars, followed by secondary fermentation in bottle. A full 48 months ageing sur lattes (ageing on lees in the bottle in which the wine is fermented) develops aromatic complexity before final hand riddling (turning of the bottles to move the sediment down into the neck of the bottle before manual removal) on traditional racks known as pupitres. Cellaring: Drink now to 2032++ There’s real depth from the first pour: ripe pear and citrus give way to toastier, more savoury notes, the extended bottle ageing bringing an extra dimension without sacrificing Chenin Blanc’s natural energy. The palate is where CM2018 really comes alive. Four years resting on its lees has given the wine texture, complexity and beautifully integrated bubbles, while Vouvray’s driving crispness keeps everything taut and focused. At just 5 g/L residual sugar, it is emphatically dry, with a crisp Extra Brut character and a long, persistent finish. This is serious sparkling Chenin, shaped by those clay-limestone slopes overlooking the Loire and matured patiently underground in Vouvray’s extraordinary tuffeau cellars. The combination of vintage character, 48 months sur lattes and traditional hand riddling makes it a compelling alternative to Champagne – distinctive, precise and unmistakably Loire.
