Urushi candles are handcrafted by Noto-based candle maker Takazawa, using wax made exclusively from the fruit of urushi (lacquer) trees grown in Wajima - a region in Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture, renowned as the home of traditional Wajima lacquerware. Each candle features a traditional wick made by wrapping dried reed around a washi paper core. This unique construction draws in air as the candle burns, producing a large, luminous flame with minimal smoke. These traditional Japanese candles are known as wa-rousoku and are carefully crafted using time-honored techniques by a dwindling number of skilled artisans in Japan.
