Korofeigu Organic, Papua New Guinea | 150gm
This coffee comes from the Korofeigu Farmer’s Cooperative Society in the Bena Bena Valley of Papua New Guinea’s Eastern Highlands. The cooperative brings together 97 smallholder farmers whose coffee gardens are spread across the mountainous region. Coffee first began taking root around Korofeigu in the mid-1940s, when local communities were introduced to coffee cultivation and received training in coffee production. Over time, coffee became an important source of income for families throughout the area. The farms sit between approximately 1400 and 1800 masl, within a cool and humid mountain environment characterised by loamy soils and dense native shade trees. Coffee is grown alongside the surrounding vegetation rather than in large monoculture plantations, creating a diverse growing environment for the smallholder farms. The combination of elevation, shade, and cooler temperatures allows the cherries to mature gradually, contributing to the full body and layered fruit character associated with coffees from the Eastern Highlands. This lot brings together traditional Arabica varieties grown by the cooperative's farmers, including Bourbon and Typica and their derivatives. Other cultivars found within the broader Korofeigu production include Arusha, Tim Tim, Ateng, Onan, Ganjang, and S795. The diversity of varieties across the smallholder farms contributes to the complexity and distinctive character of the regional lot. The coffee is processed using the washed method. Ripe cherries are selectively harvested before being pulped and fermented to remove the remaining mucilage. The parchment is then washed clean and dried, with raised beds used to improve airflow and drying consistency. The coffee is also organically certified, following a programme developed to support farmers in achieving organic certification while providing training in coffee husbandry, processing standards, and sustainable farm management. In the cup, this coffee presents dark chocolate and black tea alongside the deep fruit character of black grapes. The washed process keeps the cup clean and structured, while the combination of high elevation, traditional varieties, and organic shade-grown cultivation gives it a fuller body and lingering sweetness.
