Saint George & the Dragon by Moreau Pocket Square
Gustave Moreau 1826-1898, Saint George & the Dragon, about 1889-1890 100% Silk Hand Rolled Designed and Printed in Britain 42cm x 42cm This pocket square depicts the famous myth of Saint George & the Dragon, imagined at the key moment when Saint George strikes the fatal blow. The legend states that the dragon demanded regular human sacrifices, with the princess being drawn as the unfortunate next victim. However, the heroic Saint George rode to her rescue and saved her from her brutal fate. This scene has been a popular inspiration in Renaissance painting, executed by a number of well known artists from Rubens to Tintoretto (of which we also feature as pocket squares). The painting is an oil on canvas, and one of the few that Moreau actually completed. It works beautifully as a pocket square due to its dramatic colours, with the contrast between the dark hues and brighter whites and gold. Further details on the history of the painting can be read here: Saint George & the Dragon Painting Details. Watch how our squares are made Reviews: Click to read Customer & Expert Product Reviews.
