Out amidst the vast expanse of land and a sprawling herd made up of countless bands, the curious wanderings of playful foals often lead to moments of separation. Yet, even in the chaos, the bond remains unbroken. A mare will suddenly lift her head, her focus razor-sharp, and emit a call that resonates with the raw power of the wild. It is a sound unmistakable—a lifeline that transcends distance. No matter how far the young one has strayed, they will instantly recognize that call and race back to their mother’s side. Upon their return, the mare may deliver a firm nudge or a sharp nip, a gentle reprimand to remind the foal of their place and the safety found only at her side. These moments are a portrait of wildness and instinct, underscoring the enduring strength and wisdom of these extraordinary creatures. Likewise, a young foal can let out a panicked squeak or whinny from a distance they have traveled, serving as a distress signal. The mare will hear the young ones call of vulnerability and the two will find each other from hundreds of feet, and multiple horses away. This extraordinary connection, and communication is profound, rooted in thousands of years of navigating their wild world without the assistance from human interaction. I am reminded to honor precious life bonds that unite us all, and to the never-ending, enduring beauty of our greater wild world.
