The Canon A-1 + 50mm f/1.4 S.S.C. is a seriously good all-around Canon FD setup, pairing one of Canon’s most advanced manual-focus SLR bodies with a fast standard prime that gives you plenty of room to play with available light and shallow depth of field. The A-1 was unusually sophisticated for its era, offering shutter priority, aperture priority, programmed auto exposure, and full manual control in the same body. That makes it a great camera for someone learning film photography, but there’s enough control here that you’re unlikely to outgrow it. The electronic viewfinder display and compact FD-era ergonomics also make the A-1 a surprisingly quick camera to work with. The included Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 S.S.C. is a particularly nice pairing. Its fast f/1.4 aperture makes it useful indoors and in lower light, while the 50mm focal length works for everything from portraits and street photography to everyday walkaround shooting. The S.S.C. multicoating helps control flare and contrast while retaining the classic rendering that makes vintage Canon glass so much fun to shoot. The included 50mm f/1.4 S.S.C. lens has faint internal haze. The haze is minor but may cause a slight reduction in contrast or additional glow when shooting into strong light.
