Wellington - Te Whanganui-a-Tara Within some dramatic hills surrounding one of the southern hemisphere’s largest deep water ports lays Wellington, the capital of New Zealand. The Māori say that Wellington Harbour was originally a lake where two great Taniwha – water monsters – named Ngake and Whātaitai used to live. One day they’ve battled so hard that the earth shook, and the landscape was forever changed. That was when the Wellington Harbour, Mount Victoria and the surrounding areas where created. Wedged between steep green hills and a deep natural harbour, Wellington packs the character of a much larger capital into a remarkably compact setting. Its skyline mixes Victorian timber architecture, modern towers, the famous cable car and the unmistakable Beehive. Our skyline brings together Majestic Centre, Antrim House, HSBC Tower and The Parliament House, capturing some of the architecture and landmarks that make Wellington unmistakable.
