Antique 19th Century French River Landscape Oil Painting by a Follower of Corot in Ornate Gilt Frame

A river runs from the foreground back toward a distant village. Two cows stand in the shallows. On the far bank a figure sits beneath a single tall tree, dressed in red, the one warm note in a picture otherwise built from silver, green, and pale blue. That red is what makes the greens work. Cover it with your thumb and the whole thing goes quiet. Everything here speaks Corot's language. The feathery tree mass. The lone slender tree leaning in from the edge. The silvery light. The far village with its tower, small enough to be a suggestion rather than a place. The water holding the sky. Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot was the most influential landscape painter of nineteenth-century France. He led the Barbizon school and built the bridge between the Neoclassical tradition he inherited and the Impressionism that came after. A whole generation of painters spent their careers chasing what he found in light. This 19th century panel is one of theirs, working close to his manner and signed with their own monogram. Swept gilt in the Louis XV manner, scrolled cartouches at every corner and center, gold with real depth in it, bright across the raised ornament and darker down in the recesses.
