Choline Chloride 70%
Industrial Applications Choline Chloride 70% is an aqueous solution of a quaternary ammonium salt used primarily in the oil and gas industry as a clay stabilizer and shale inhibitor. In water-based drilling and completion fluids, it controls the migration of clay fines and prevents the swelling of reactive shales that can damage the wellbore and reduce permeability. As an additive in hydraulic fracturing fluids, it helps protect the formation and maintain conductivity during well stimulation. Choline Chloride is widely adopted as a high-efficiency alternative to potassium chloride (KCl). It delivers effective clay and shale stabilization at lower concentrations, sharply reduces chloride release, and offers improved biodegradability and lower toxicity, which is favorable where environmental and disposal requirements matter. Beyond oilfield use, choline chloride also serves as a nutritional additive in animal feed and as an intermediate in various industrial processes. Physical Properties Choline Chloride 70% is a quaternary ammonium salt supplied as a clear, colorless to pale yellow (light amber) aqueous solution containing approximately 70 percent choline chloride in water. It has a faint amine-like odor and is fully miscible with water. The solution is mildly acidic to neutral and has a typical density of about 1.09 to 1.10 g/cm3 at 20 C. Choline chloride is strongly hygroscopic, so containers should be kept sealed and protected from moisture. In its pure crystalline form the salt (molecular weight 139.62 g/mol) is very soluble in water and decomposes near 302 C.
