A masterpiece by Goseki Hiroshi, a ceramic artist working in Ibaraki Prefecture: the Sōhen Kuro Chawan. Within its deep, black-based surface, a blue Void seems to emerge and quietly seep through. Against the stillness of the black, the blue appears to rise from within, while golden kiln effects appear around the lower section, creating a beautiful contrast. The slight wavering of the rim and the flowing traces of ash across the body are also striking, and when held in the hands, the quiet center of gravity of the bowl can be deeply felt. Seen through the context of Chūwan and its observer, this blue may evoke a nebula appearing in the night sky, or even the presence of an extraterrestrial being itself. Bearing the title “Communion,” the work carries the meaning of communication with the cosmos. It is truly a chawan that opens a different universe within each person who beholds it.
