Eterna was founded in 1856 in Grenchen, Switzerland, by Josef Girard and Urs Schild as “Dr. Girard & Schild.” Initially a movement manufacturer, the brand became renowned for precision and innovation. In 1905, it officially adopted the name Eterna. The company revolutionized watchmaking in 1948 with the invention of the Eterna-Matic — the world’s first self-winding movement using a ball-bearing mounted rotor system, which became the foundation for modern automatic watches. Eterna also gave birth to ETA SA, one of the most important Swiss movement manufacturers. Over the decades, Eterna has been known for its craftsmanship, pioneering spirit, and elegant design, producing icons like the KonTiki line, inspired by Thor Heyerdahl’s 1947 expedition.
