This novel features the stories of three men connected by chance in Herceg Novi, Serbia. The main character is Professor Radmilovic, a clinical psychiatrist who helps others while dealing with a political prisoner from Golog Island. Another character is a medieval judge who befriends an elderly man he accidentally hit while riding his cart. The third is Van Gogh, a famous painter whose life and work are explored by Professor Jovanovic.
