Thelonious Monk Quartet - 1963 Monterey Jazz Festival

Recorded live on September 22, 1963, this landmark performance captures Thelonious Monk at the absolute height of his creative powers. Featuring a telepathic ensemble of Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, John Ore on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums, the quartet operates as a unified, telepathic organism navigating complex harmonic labyrinths with effortless grace. Unlike contemporaries chasing endless velocity, Monk’s genius shines through the strategic use of space, silence, and sudden harmonic shifts. This historic recording preserves a fleeting, magical convergence of time and place, delivering the raw, unadulterated spirit of a jazz master and his band in peak form. The signal path begins with a modified Technics 1500 with Flux Heads, fed through a Merrill Audio Master MX Tape Head Preamp. The analogue signal is converted via a Merging Anubis converter, powered by a Teddy Pardo dedicated linear power supply synchronised to an Antelope Audio 10MX atomic clock for temporal accuracy. All components receive isolated power conditioning through a Shunyata Research Everest X with Shunyata Sigma-X power cords, while grounding infrastructure utilises Shunyata ALTAIRA hubs to minimise noise floor and preserve sonic detail throughout the transfer chain. 1 Introduction 0:39 2 Evidence 12:03 3 I Mean You 12:07 4 Sweet & Lovely 19:04 5 Bright Mississippi 9:31 The original 1/2-inch, 3-track, 15 ips master tapes were transferred to digital for mixing.
