String of Turtles
Slow and steady wins the shelf. The String of Turtles plant (Peperomia prostrata) is a tiny trailing gem whose round, coin-sized leaves are patterned like little turtle shells - deep green marbled with silvery veins - strung along delicate, cascading stems. Native to the rainforests of Brazil, it's a compact, semi-succulent peperomia that stores water in its plump leaves. Growth is gentle rather than fast: over time the stems lengthen into soft trails that spill beautifully from a small hanging pot, shelf edge, or terrarium. Care snapshot Light: Bright, indirect light keeps the shell patterning crisp; avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the small leaves. Water: Let the top of the soil dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly. Those thick leaves hold moisture, so it prefers a little too dry over too wet. A chunky, well-draining mix helps. Difficulty: Intermediate — easy-going once you learn its watering rhythm. Pet-safety: Considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though we still recommend keeping plants out of nibbling range. What you'll receive Plants are living things, so the String of Turtles you receive will have its own character and may vary slightly from the photo — that's part of the charm. Small in size, big in personality — String of Turtles is a pet-friendly favourite for windowsills, desks, and plant shelves where every little detail gets noticed. Give one a home and let it take its time to wow you.
