Nils Thorsson Iron-Red Vase

A vibrant jernrød, or iron-red, vase designed by Nils Thorsson and made at Royal Copenhagen in 1959. This attractive vase has a softly squared form with rounded shoulders and a narrow neck. Its brilliant vermilion jernrød glaze is scattered with darker iron-rich speckles. The jernrød glaze was discovered accidentally in 1959, the same year this vase was produced, by Royal Copenhagen’s chemical engineer Leif Lautrup-Larsen. The distinctive iron-red glaze became a favourite of Thorsson, who used it for a number of individual and experimental works. A particularly pleasing example of Thorsson’s more individual work at Royal Copenhagen, this piece brings together a refined sculptural form with an experimental glaze developed in the very year the vase was made.
