Château Greysac is a Médoc Cru Bourgeois Supérieur, one of the Bordeaux appellation’s dependable, everyday-drinking names. The wine is a Merlot-led Left Bank blend, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot (in the 2018, for example, the blend was 65% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot). The Médoc, in the far north of the Left Bank, is a cooler, more variable terroir, and in hot, dry vintages like 2020, it produced “very fine drinking with age-ability” at bargain prices. 2020 was one of those hot, dry vintages, and Greysac made a soft, fresh, forward wine. Jeff Leve, writing for The Wine Cellar Insider, scored it 89: “Medium-bodied, fresh and chewy, with a solid core of cherries, mocha, cedar and soft-textures, this is already set to go, for easy-going, uncomplicated and pleasurable drinking,” and suggests drinking it from 2023 to 2034. Markus Del Monego MW scored it 90: “Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Fine nose with fragrant fruit, black cherries, blackberries and hints of blackcurrants, subtle toasting and gingerbread spices in the background. On the palate well structured with medium body, very good length, ripe tannins and refined acidity complemented by juicy fruit and mild spices.” A house-style note for the estate describes “an attractive bouquet: lightly roasted wood spice and nicely concentrated blackcurrant fruit,” “a very good wine, straightforward, well-priced for a Bordeaux Médoc,” and other tasters note “plush, well-structured, gorgeous fruit on the palate.” This is not a wine for the long haul or a showpiece, and tasters say so honestly: one sommelier calls it “not terribly complex but a real nice price point for an everyday Bordeaux.” But as a weeknight Bordeaux, it delivers: easy to drink on release, with enough structure for roast chicken, burgers, pasta, and steak. It pairs with all meats, poultry, wild mushrooms, and strong cheeses.
