The Masonic Tyler Sword The Tyler, also spelled Tiler, is the officer traditionally responsible for guarding the entrance to a Masonic Lodge. The United Grand Lodge of England describes the Tyler as the officer responsible for guarding the Lodge door, and notes that the Tyler can be the first person a candidate encounters during an initiation ceremony. The sword has a long association with the office of the Tyler.
