Watch Overview Here we have a vintage Wakmann chronograph wristwatch dating to the 1960s. Wakmann established a close relationship with Breitling in the U.S. market, forming the Breitling Watch Corporation of America as a joint venture in 1947. Wakmann later became an important U.S. distributor of Breitling watches while continuing to offer its own line of chronographs and professional timepieces. The watch is powered by the Venus caliber 188, a Swiss manual-wind chronograph movement with 17 jewels and Incabloc shock protection. It operates at 18,000 vibrations per hour and provides central chronograph seconds, a 30-minute chronograph counter, and small seconds. The Venus 188 is a cam-actuated chronograph movement, rather than a column-wheel design. Introduced by Venus in the 1940s, it featured 17 jewels, operated at 18,000 vibrations per hour, and offered approximately 45 hours of power reserve. The design later evolved into the Valjoux 7730 after Valjoux acquired Venus. The champagne dial features applied gold-tone hour markers, Arabic numerals at 6 and 12, matching hands, and two recessed sub-dials. Small seconds are positioned at 9 o’clock, while the 30-minute chronograph counter is located at 3 o’clock. The outer portion of the dial includes tachymeter and telemeter scales. The 37mm round stainless steel case features a fixed polished bezel, rectangular chronograph pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock, and a screw-down caseback. It is fitted with a brown leather strap. It has been inspected by our in-house watchmaker and is running and keeping time.
