DeAnna Tibbs, a friend of founder Jen Angel, staged and photographed the scene, and the Angel Cakes team baked the cakes and cupcakes to represent their signature flavors. Pastel wood panels, disco balls, candy jars, citrus slices, and striped straws fill every corner with color. The props came from a neighborhood Buy Nothing group. About the Organization: Angel Cakes Collective Jen Angel started Angel Cakes as a home bakery in 2008 and grew it into an online business, starting with a Kickstarter campaign. In March 2016 she opened a retail shop at 745 5th Street in Oakland, the candy pink Victorian that was home for 36 years to TJ's Gingerbread House, a Creole restaurant founded by Louisiana native TJ Robinson. In 2025 the building was restored to cupcake pink to honor both the restaurant and the bakery. Before baking full time, Jen was an independent media producer and progressive community activist who valued collaboration over competition. After her passing in 2023, the business was placed in a trust for her employees, who chose to carry on her legacy as Angel Cakes Collective, a women-and-queer-owned worker cooperative that became official in July 2024. In 2025 the co-op launched a community-funded program that sponsors cakes and cupcakes, at no cost, for people experiencing homelessness or financial hardship. Angel Cakes serves cakes, cupcakes, and small desserts made with ethically sourced ingredients, including allergy-friendly options. Their cakes are made by Kelly, Estella, Morgan, Zoey, Joey, and Dylan. Learn more on the Angel Cakes website.
