Finland Amethyst Set, Made for Vered

Vered and her partner went to an amethyst mine in Finland, paid at the entrance, were handed tools and sent out to dig for themselves. It was freezing and it rained, and they came back with a handful of rough amethyst they had pulled out of the ground with their own hands. Those stones sat in my studio for a few months before we started, and in the end they became a birthday present from him to her: a pendant, a ring and a pair of earrings. The stones came out of the mine as they were, jagged and uncut, and that is how I wanted them to stay. I ground down the underside of the stones for the ring and the earrings, only to lower them enough to sit properly against the skin. Everything you see on top is untouched, the natural faces and the shine that came out of the rock. Because there was no cut to hold onto, there was nothing to set in the usual way. So for each stone I built a cradle of gold wire, soldered together and shaped to that particular stone, with the wires crossing where the stone needed to be held and staying clear of the faces. On the ring, those wires are soldered straight to the band, so the cradle and the ring are one piece. Every stone got its own, made for its own shape and for what it had to do. The whole set is 14K yellow gold, and the work took about a month. This set was made for Vered and is not for sale.
