Joe Bowler — Girl at Shoreline, 1980

Original Oil on Canvas | Signed | American Master Illustrator & Painter A beautifully atmospheric original oil on canvas by celebrated American painter and illustrator Joe Bowler (1928–2017). In Girl at Shoreline, Bowler captures a young girl standing barefoot at the water's edge, surrounded by luminous surf, coastal rocks, and an expansive horizon. The painting is particularly appealing for its delicate handling of sunlight, reflected color and atmosphere. The girl's simple white dress becomes a focal point against the subtle blues, greens, lavender, and warm flesh tones of the shoreline. Painted in 1980, the work comes from an important period in Bowler's artistic development following his move from New York to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where he increasingly devoted himself to fine-art painting and portraiture. ABOUT JOE BOWLER Joe Bowler was far more than a regional painter. He was an accomplished national magazine illustrator and portrait artist, whose work appeared in publications including The Saturday Evening Post, McCall's, Ladies' Home Journal, and Time. His portrait commissions included prominent American figures and personalities. In 1967, Bowler was named Artist of the Year by the Artists' Guild of New York. In 1992, he was elected to the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame, an honor recognizing artists whose bodies of work made a significant impact on American illustration. His paintings remain represented in the secondary market, with examples selling from the low thousands into considerably higher territory. Heritage Auctions records a $6,875 auction price for Bowler's Cheering at the Ball Game, while other original oils have sold around $1,000–$1,500.
