Ko-Ido Chawan "Hasuhana" by Jonghun Kim

A Ko-Ido Chawan by Jonghoon Kim, a ceramic artist based in Gyeonggi-do, Korea. Fine crazing spreads across the soft biwa-toned glaze, giving the bowl a quiet presence reminiscent of an old Ido chawan. Its naturally opening form is balanced by a powerful transition from the lower body to the foot, where distinctive kairagi develops around the base. One of the most striking features of this piece is the black repair line running across the body. The naturally occurring crack, together with the lines created through its repair, forms a landscape reminiscent of lotus petals opening in bloom. Inspired by this combination of form and repair, the bowl was given the poetic name “Renka” (蓮華), meaning “Lotus Blossom.” Within the restrained dignity characteristic of Ko-Ido, chance and human intervention come together to create a powerful and highly individual landscape.
