In Roman mythology, Janus was the god of dawn and dusk—always seeing in two directions at once. It is this dual nature that Bertil Vallien has returned to time and again since the mid‑1990s. In the sand‑cast head Janus, one half is awake, the other asleep. Not as a contradiction, but as a conversation—a continuous dialogue between two states of being. Sand casting is the technique Vallien has long made his own— raw, poetic, and far removed from the refined elegance of polished crystal. In Janus, the glass carries something quiet and enigmatic, much like the myth from which it originates.
