Central Heat Pump ADD-ON ARCOAIRE HSH6 Premium | 5 Tons - 60,000 BTU (Coil EVD4X 24.5 in.) - R410A
Living day to day with a heat pump and an electric furnace in a large houseThe ADD-ON system adds a heat pump to an existing electric furnace: a coil is installed on the furnace and the outdoor unit heats and cools through the same ducts. The furnace's electric elements are only used as backup. The Central Heat Pump ADD-ON ARCOAIRE HSH6 Premium | 5 Tons - 60,000 BTU (Coil EVD4X 24.5 in.) - R410A pairs the HSH660GKA outdoor unit with the EVD4X60M24A coil.A heat pump added to an electric furnace does not behave quite like a furnace alone. Heat arrives differently, the thermostat makes decisions you never saw before, and some old settings become counterproductive. In a large house, these differences are more noticeable. This page brings together what you need to know to get the best comfort from it, season after season.Gentler heat, for longerOn its own, the electric furnace blows very hot air in short cycles: the house warms up quickly, then cools down until the next cycle. The heat pump works differently. Its air is less hot, but it runs longer, and the temperature varies less between the start and the end of a cycle. In a large house on several levels, this more continuous circulation also reduces the gaps between rooms close to the furnace and rooms farther away.At first, you may feel that the air at the registers is not warm enough. This is normal: heat is delivered more slowly, but more steadily. The thermostat's set point is still met.Night-time setbacksWith a furnace alone, it was common to lower the temperature sharply at night or during the workday. With a heat pump, too deep a setback has an unexpected effect: when it is time to raise the temperature again, the thermostat may judge the heat pump too slow and bring in the furnace's electric elements, even though the heat pump would have been enough.A moderate setback, or a steady set point, often gives the best result. Several heat pump thermostats manage the recovery themselves by starting earlier with the heat pump. At commissioning, we explain how yours behaves and which settings suit it.The blower: auto or continuousIn auto mode, the furnace blower only runs during heating or cooling cycles. In continuous mode, it circulates air all the time. In a large house, continuous mode sometimes helps even out the temperature between levels and sends the air through the filter more often. In summer, on the other hand, auto mode favours dehumidification, because the water collected on the coil has time to drain between cycles. We help you choose according to the season and the layout of the house.Winter humidityIn winter, the cold outdoor air is dry, and the air in the house becomes dry too. If a humidifier is connected to the furnace, it generally stays in place; we check its position relative to the coil and its connection to the controls. Set its humidistat carefully during very cold weather: condensation on the bottom of the windows means the setting should be lowered.Defrost, seen from insideIn cold, humid weather, frost forms on the outdoor unit, which melts it with short defrost cycles. Outside, a plume of white vapour comes out of the unit. Inside, the furnace's electric elements may come on briefly so that the air at the registers stays warm in the meantime. Then the heat pump resumes its work. None of this indicates a breakdown.Summer in a large houseIn summer, the same unit cools the whole house through the existing ducts. The coil removes humidity from the air; the water drains through the condensate line to the floor drain or a pump. In a house on several levels, the upper floor often needs more air than the basement: we show you which dampers to adjust from one season to the next. A steady set point, rather than a sharp drop when you get home, gives better results during heat waves in Montreal. The 5-ton size and the HSH6 seriesThe 5-ton size is the largest common residential size. It suits a very large house on two or three levels, a heavily glazed house or an extended house, in Laval or on the South Shore. These examples are only a guide: we size the heat pump on the cooling load, established by a room-by-room load calculation, since the furnace's electric elements cover the deep cold. If the calculation ends up at a smaller size, we tell you.The HSH660GKA unit belongs to the HSH6 series, one of Arcoaire's Premium series. The EVD4X60M24A coil, a 24.5 in. format, is shared by the series of this size; it must match the width of the furnace cabinet, with a sealed sheet-metal transition when needed.System ratingsThe pairing of the HSH660GKA outdoor unit and the EVD4X60M24A coil is not listed with SEER2 ratings in the AHRI certification directory. We confirm the ratings of the complete system before the quote; they also determine grant eligibility. The confirmed ratings are given to you in writing; they are also used to set the thermostat's auxiliary heat threshold. This page shows none.LogisVertThis pairing does not carry an amount on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 19, 2026. If the grant matters for your project, we will point you to an eligible pairing of comparable size.Installation on the existing furnaceThe coil sits on the furnace's air outlet, and a compatible thermostat decides when the heat pump heats alone and when the electric furnace takes over. We check the condition of the furnace, the airflow of its blower and the duct sizes before the quote. The outdoor unit goes on a stand, above the snow line, on a dedicated circuit. The outdoor unit is placed out of roof drip and away from bedroom windows, according to your municipality's rules, with an outdoor disconnect within sight. The insulated refrigerant line set is brazed under nitrogen, pressure-tested and evacuated before the R-410A charge.Commissioning, and what we show youAt commissioning, we adjust the refrigerant charge, the blower speed for each mode and the auxiliary heat threshold of the heat pump thermostat, set according to the heat loss of the house and your preferences. We then test cooling, heat pump heating, auxiliary heat from the electric elements and defrost. Before leaving, we show you how to read the thermostat, change the auxiliary heat threshold, choose the blower mode and replace the filter. These are the settings that make the difference day to day.MaintenanceReplace the system filter according to its format, keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coil, condensate drain and electrical connections. In winter, white vapour during defrost is normal. If you run the blower in continuous mode, the filter gets dirty faster: check it more often. The electric furnace keeps its usual maintenance, centred on the blower, the heating elements and their connections.AirGreen, for the life of the installationA family business active for more than fifteen years in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore, we hold RBQ licences for ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work and carry $5,000,000 in liability insurance.
