A vintage modernist pendant by Elis Kauppi for the Finnish brand Kupittaan Kulta, dated 1976. Simple: an oval red stone in silver, but it is precisely the relationship between the warm carnelian and the understated silver setting that makes the design so successful. The cabochon-cut stone fills almost the entire front and has a beautiful orange-red colour that appears slightly deeper or brighter depending on the light. The carnelian is set in a smooth, closed bezel setting. Above the pendant is a simple U-shaped connecting element with a movable bail. The back features a complete set of Finnish hallmarks: the maker's mark of Kupittaan Kulta, the crown in the heart as the national control mark, 925 for sterling silver, the city mark of Turku and the Y7 date stamp for 1976. The pendant is offered with a gourmet chain in sterling silver. The carnelian is very well preserved. The silver shows normal signs of wear, with fine scratches and a few small dents and scuffs on the back and along the edges. These are appropriate for its age and do not affect wearability.
