It moves from turquoise at the centre to a deeper shade around the outer 24-hour scale, giving the dial a striking sense of depth. Broad markers, twin crowns and a sculpted steel case lend the Mecha SUS GMT real presence on the wrist. This is a distinctly late-1990s Seiko, confident in its shape and unafraid to look different. But the design has a purpose beyond appearance. Its additional 24-hour hand works with the rotating inner ring to keep a second time zone in view, while Seiko's automatic calibre 4S12 does the work beneath the dial. It's an engaging travel watch, bringing together practical mechanical ingenuity and the bold design of its era. A BIT OF TRIVIA The 4S12 has a small trick worth knowing. Its arrow-tipped 24-hour hand is linked to the normal hour hand rather than being independently set. To read a different time zone, you rotate the numbered inner ring by the time difference. Seiko even illustrated the process in the movement's original instructions. It's an unusually hands-on way of travelling between two times, and part of what makes this SUS feel like a proper piece of equipment. OUR THOUGHTS We have handled the black and red versions of this reference, and each has its appeal, but there's something especially inviting about the blue. Depending on the light it can look deep and serious or surprisingly bright. The bracelet carries that rather wonderfully chunky 1990s design through to the wrist, so the watch feels like one complete idea. It would be a lovely choice for someone who enjoys a watch with a little more going on than the usual three hands, without wanting something enormous.
