Bleu Cendré La Mémée is made by the Société Laitière de Laqueuille, a cooperative dairy founded in 1949 by Antoine Sarliève in Laqueuille-Gare, set at the foot of the Sancy massif in the Puy-de-Dôme — the volcanic heart of Auvergne, a region with a cattle-raising and blue-cheesemaking tradition stretching back generations and best known as the birthplace of Bleu d'Auvergne. "La Mémée" is the dairy's flagship brand, built on that regional know-how and recognized internationally, including a gold medal at the 2024 Frankfurt International Competition for its sister cheese. This particular wheel takes the classic Auvergnat blue in a distinctive direction: its rind is dusted with vegetable ash rather than left natural, wrapping a soft, supple, ivory-white paste laced with delicate blue-green veining. The result is markedly gentler than a traditional Bleu d'Auvergne — creamy, mild, and only lightly piquant, with a subtle earthiness that makes it an easy, approachable entry point into blue cheese for newcomers and enthusiasts alike.
