Pooley Syrah 2024 750ml

Pooley is a family-owned estate in Tasmania's Coal River Valley, less than an hour north of Hobart. Denis and Margaret Pooley planted the first vines in 1985, and the family is now in its third generation, with Anna Pooley making the wines and her brother Matt looking after the vineyards. While the estate is best known for Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, its Syrah has become one of the most distinctive reds on the island. The Coal River Valley is about as cool a climate as Syrah sees in Australia, which pushes the style closer to the northern Rhône than to mainland Shiraz. The 2024 was given extended skin contact for depth and structure, then matured largely in older French oak for texture, with a portion kept in stainless steel to hold freshness and natural acidity. Expect dark plum, blackberry and cherry fruit wrapped in violet florals, white pepper and a savoury thread of smoked meat and graphite. The medium-bodied palate is plush yet precise, with fine tannins, lively acidity and a long, structured finish. A great match for lamb, game or charcuterie. Vintages may vary.
