The name spikenard covers two unrelated plants. American spikenard is Aralia racemosa, a member of the ivy family. The nard of antiquity is Nardostachys jatamansi, a small Himalayan plant of the valerian lineage, and it is the only source of true spikenard oil. 01 · Origin A low perennial of high Himalayan meadows, now placed in the Caprifoliaceae. This oil is distilled in Nepal from the roots of wild-crafted organic plants. The species is slow to mature and international trade in it is regulated under CITES, so documented wild harvest is a condition of supply. 02 · Chemistry A sesquiterpene oil from top to base. 6,9-Guaiadiene, alpha- and beta-gurjunene and valerenadiene form the hydrocarbon body. Valeranone, a sesquiterpene ketone shared with valerian, accounts for much of the weight and tenacity. A sizeable part of the profile remains unassigned on routine GC analysis. Colour runs from yellowish to greenish. 03 · In Practice Heavy, earthy and balsamic, with a dry woody sweetness and a faint animalic edge. A base note and fixative of unusual persistence in natural perfumery, extending the dry-down of woody and resinous compositions. Diffusion during meditation practice, massage blends, and scalp and skincare formulation at low concentration. Blends with frankincense, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, cedarwood, myrrh, rose and lavender. General information: For external use only. Dilute before applying to skin. Keep away from heat and sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Hazard statements: H317 May cause an allergic skin reaction. H411 Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.
