Luguru Figure on Custom Base Tanzania Rohner Collection

Luguru Carving – Tanzania – Rohner Collection A striking Luguru carved wooden figure from Tanzania, presented on a custom display base. The carving has a wonderfully expressive, simplified form with the distinctive character of traditional East African sculpture. Its compact size and strong silhouette make it especially effective as a sculptural display piece. The Luguru (Waluguru) are an ethnic group of east-central Tanzania, traditionally inhabiting the Uluguru Mountains and surrounding region. Luguru carving is relatively less commonly encountered than the better-known sculptural traditions of neighboring East African peoples, making examples such as this particularly appealing to collectors of African ethnographic art. Provenance: John R. Rohner Collection Rohner, a museum curator for decades, aimed his practiced eye for authenticity to African art beginning in the early 1980s. His passion for this art only grew through the decades he built his collection––always with an aim for a broad and representative array of pieces. The collection appears in his book, Art Treasures from African Runners (2000, University Press of Colorado). Item #672 on pg. 247 Height (in): 7.75 Width (in): 3.0 Depth (in): 1.5 157311
