Looking Up
I was on my way to run errands when this blazing tree simply would not let me pass — I made a U-turn, pulled over, and looked up. The clouds had been solid gray most of the morning, but in the few minutes I stood beneath that canopy they broke just enough to reveal the blue, and suddenly the reds and golds were lit from behind like stained glass window. I captured a few frames, rain started, and I drove on, the errands still waiting, entirely unrepentant. Like most of my work, this is unapologetically not a documentary shot; I work with the capture, see where it wants to go, and take it from there. The furthest leaves start to fall out of focus and are little abstract shapes. I recall working on this shot a few minutes a day over several days. It is my last numbered work of 2025.
