HUMAN MAST CELL AND MAST CELL DISORDERS
Dear readers; After publishing our book on cutaneous mastocytosis, a child-hood mast cell disorder, in 2025, it received significant interest. Con-sequently, this year we wanted to share our new book, “Human Mast Cell and Mast Cell Disorders,” which covers systemic mastocytosis and other mast cell disorders, with our valued readers. In this book on mast cell disorders, we have included contribu-tions from our experienced professors who work in this field, are experts on the subject, and played a role in the first book, as well as from our younger colleagues. We hope that they will take ownership of this work in the future and ensure that research in this area con-tinues with them. This book consists of 5 separate sections and 26 separate chap-ters. The first section of this book provides general information on human mast cells and the fundamentals of mast cell disorders. In ad-dition to refreshing general knowledge about mast cells, it provides an introduction to the pathophysiology of the disorders and what the disorders entail. In the second and third sections of the book, cutaneous and sys-temic mastocytosis diseases seen in children and adults, respective-ly, are described in detail from various perspectives. Problems more commonly encountered in the clinic in patients with cutaneous and systemic mastocytosis are discussed under separate headings. The fourth and fifth sections describe the diagnostic and thera-peutic approaches to mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) and its subtypes, which have recently come to the fore. The differential di-agnosis and treatment of MCAS are also discussed. The fifth section details hereditary alpha tryptasemia, a newly recognized condition gaining awareness, and idiopathic anaphylaxis, a condition whose cause has remained elusive for years, in a clear and understandable manner. Additionally, future expectations in this field are addressed in a separate section. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the profes-sors and young colleagues who contributed to the preparation of this book, and also to my wife Seval Hülya Özdemir and my beloved daughter Berrin Nikame Özdemir for their moral support. With the hope that this book will be appreciated and beneficial to all our readers and colleagues; Prof. Dr. Öner ÖZDEMİR Sakarya University, Faculty of Medicine, Research and Training Hospital, Department of Pediatric Immunology and Allergy, Sakarya, Türkiye
