Large West German Sgraffito Klinker Ceramic Vase, Siershahn, Mid-Century 1950s–60s

A striking West German ceramic vase from the historic Kannenbäckerland pottery region of Rhineland-Palatinate, most likely from the Siershahn–Mogendorf area and dating from the 1950s–60s. Made from reddish clinker clay with a dark matte surface, the vase is decorated with a deeply incised sgraffito leaf or feather design, picked out with muted green detailing. The tall, elegant form has a gently flared neck and, at 40 cm high, has a strong sculptural presence. The style and construction are closely associated with ceramics produced around Siershahn and Mogendorf during the 1950s and 1960s, including work by Sawa / Siershahner Feinsteinzeugfabrik, though the exact maker is not known. The base is unglazed and shows age-related wear, with traces of an indistinct mark. A distinctive and decorative example of mid-century West German pottery, combining a simple modernist form with hand-worked sgraffito decoration.
