Dwarf Blue Indigo (Baptisia australis var. minor) often called False Indigo is native to Tennessee. Dwarf Blue Indigo is a perennial wildflower that forms a small "shrub" shape; excellent for landscaping. Smaller than, but similar to, its cousin Baptisia australis, Baptisia minor prefers full-sun, well-drained sites and is tolerant of heat and drought. Like Baptisia australis, Dwarf Blue Indigo is also one of the host plants for many native insects. As a piece of information, Species of genus Baptisia are legumes. Most legume species harbor beneficial bacteria called rhizobia on their roots. Genus-specific strains of this bacterium called inoculum can aid in the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen and improve long-term health of native plant communities. Inoculum is naturally-occurring in most soils and additional amendment is usually not needed. However, in low fertility soils it may be necessary. Care Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Best in full sun. Tolerates drought and poor soils. This plant is effective in the landscape when used for borders, cottage gardens, prairies, meadows and native plant gardens. Can also be effective in naturalized settings. It looks best as a specimen or in small groups in gardens. Best grown in zones 3-9. Growth Habit It grows up to 3 feet tall and just as wide. Its striking vertical form and ability to serve as a focal point when blooming each spring can make this plant a garden star. In Tennessee, its spiky blooms usually last 3 to 4 weeks during April. Toxicity Generally considered safe for pets, but it can be considered midly toxic. The plant contains a milky sap that can cause skin irritation upon contact and mild gastrointestinal issues (vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss) if eaten in large quantities. Highly regarded as deer resistant.
