Do you find yourself staring blankly at the glaze wall, a stack of bisqueware pieces by your side, with no sense of direction or idea of how to glaze your work? In this four-week course, we will journey through the ceramic process from start to finish while focusing on creative experimentation and personal expression through various surface design techniques. Together, we will learn how to think of the ending while at the beginning. In this four-week course, you’ll learn to design your work with surface treatments in mind while exploring techniques like sgraffito, underglaze, stenciling, wax resist, and more. Whether you’re refining your current skills or trying something new, this course will provide hands-on demonstrations and guidance. Hand builders and wheel throwers welcome. Location Still Life Studios Ferndale 700 Livernois Ferndale, MI, 48220 Class Outline Week 1: Designing and creating forms Week 2: Intro to wet surface design; sgraffito, carving, layering, and stencils. Week 3: Continuation of wet surface design Week 4: Glazing with vinyl decals, wax, and other glazing techniques. What you’ll need: Unglazed bisqueware A sketchbook Pencil, pen, or markers Some digital inspiration photos Optional: Underglazes in colors you like A fan brush Detail painting brushes About This Class Classes meet once a week for 2-hour sessions, with open studio time daily for you to practice on your own. Course fee includes everything you need: clay, use of studio tools, and firing for up to 12 pieces. Additional clay is available for purchase at our supply shop. Bisque pieces made outside of the studio must be made using Cone 5/6 clay. To get the most out of this class, we recommend that you feel comfortable with all of the steps and processes in wheel-throwing or handbuilding. We strongly advise you to make sure you’ll be able to attend all class sessions before signing up. We do not offer make-ups for this class. For cancellations made fewer than 4 full days, but more than 24 hours before the start time, a 50% refund or 50% credit toward another class or workshop will be issued. We cannot provide refunds or credits for cancellations or rescheduling requests made fewer than 24 hours before class starts, if you miss class, or arrive too late to participate.
