VINTAGE BRASS LONG-TAILED PHEASANT SCULPTURES, MATCHED PAIR, CIRCA 1970S–1980S

An unusually beautiful matched pair of vintage brass pheasants, distinguished by extraordinarily elaborate long-tailed plumage and richly modeled sculptural detail. Rather than the comparatively simple solid tails found on many decorative brass birds, these pheasants feature dramatic layers of individually articulated feather forms. Fine linear detailing follows the length of the sweeping tail feathers, while deeply modeled shorter plumage creates texture, dimension, and shadow. The companion birds have subtly different postures, crests, bodies, and feather configurations, creating the traditional effect of a male and female pair. Detailed heads, overlapping neck plumage, sculpted wings, expressive feet, and dimensional casting reward viewing from every angle. Their warm golden brass retains areas of darker naturally aged patination within the recesses. We particularly love this contrast because it emphasizes the remarkable feather modeling rather than allowing the intricate surface to disappear into a uniformly polished finish. Comparable examples suggest Korean decorative brass production of the circa 1970s–1980s period. As no maker or country mark has been confirmed on this pair, we present the Korean origin as an attribution. At approximately 13 inches long and a substantial 3.06 pounds combined, these birds have wonderful decorative presence without requiring an enormous display space. They would be magnificent across a mantel, positioned together on a console or credenza, or separated slightly between books and collected objects in a library.
